Towards a framework for imagining mobile applications.

From the Flikr of davidcrow

Earlier this week, Helge posted the image above, which ties into something that I’ve been trying to get a handle on for a while now. Is there a smart and simple framework around for thinking about the creation of a mobile application? One that enables creative thinking around the role and possibilities for the application not necessarily the technical aspects of it.

Seems to me that one way of thinking about this is to create a model of the different stages first. That’s what the attempt above is - essentially a mobile application can be thought of as an information transformation or modification that’s conducted for a user with a set of data in order to gain a new understanding or set of data that enables the user to accomplish the task - (whew).

In each stage you can then extend the model to account for type of information input (eg keyboard, camera, accelerometer, GPS, etc.), type of transformation and so on.

Anyone working on anything like this or seen anything like this that might be useful?

I love the image you posted here. And I did just recently work through something very similar. I’d love to hear what you think:

The approach I arrived at involves thinking conceptually about the mobile space from the perspective of the user. It’s hard to keep that stuff simple, and what I did definitely isn’t perfect! I’ll look forward to watching where you go with this.
