Wii as platform for services.

I have gaming on my mind lately (in case you haven’t noticed) and I have been doing some research on Nintendo’s recent announcement around Wii Ware. In case you haven’t been keeping track, Nintendo are opening up the Wii to “indie developers” and from 2008 onwards will be making games downloadable via the Internet.

Obviously this doesn’t just open up opportunities for game developers, it also opens up opportunities for marketers. I fully expect to see downloadable content of all forms appear as Wii market share increases and brands start realizing they have a unique channel that reaches the family when they’re together. It also could become quite a significant revenue stream for Nintendo, if they choose to pursue that route.

However, it also makes the Wii a perfect platform to deliver cool services. Think of H&M releasing sorely needed outfits for your Miis as well as the Sims. Or Nike creating workouts that use the Wiimotes to track your fitness performance. The opportunities here are huge. I know Zeus Jones will be pitching Wii Services to our clients.
