Content as a service.

A couple of sites that I’ve come across recently are pretty interesting uses of content to deliver a service. The first is Now Play It, which I found via Mashable. This is a brilliant idea – record videos of artists teaching you how to play their own songs and sell them for under $10 a pop. Not sure how big the audience is for this, but I’d think the long-tail might help these guys out.
The second is Expert Village which I found doing some other research. This claims to be “The World’s Largest How-to Video Site.” Here’s one example of a personal trainer who’s put a bunch of her how to videos up:
These are great examples of how content – other than entertainment content – can be created that has real utility for people. The production value on these films is low, these clearly aren’t high budget shoots, the value is in their information not their execution.
Do they have more value than a big budget, lavish entertainment-oriented piece of content? That’s subjective, but I’d bet the ROI for this kind of content is far better.
